Very truly yours,
The Easter Bunny was introduced to the United States by the German settlers who arrived in the Pennsylvania Dutch country during the 18th century. The arrival of the Osterhase was considered one of "childhood's greatest pleasures", similar to the arrival of Kris Kringle on Christmas Eve. In legend, the creature brings baskets filled with colored eggs, candy and sometimes also toys to the homes of children, and as such shows similarities to Father Christmas, as they both bring gifts to children and on the night before their respective holiday. According to the legend, only good children received gifts of colored eggs in the nests that they made in their caps and bonnets before Easter.
In reality, however, each year thousands of baby rabbits, chicks, and ducks are purchased as Easter gifts to good children ONLY to be abandoned or left at shelters in the days, weeks and months that follow Easter by irresponsible parents. House Rabbit Society (HRS) strongly urges parents not to buy their children live "Easter bunnies" unless they are willing to make a 10-year commitment to properly care for the animals. Why not get a chocolate bunny instead and consider helping BWF put an end to cruelty to and abuse of animals by sending a special contribution today?
Lucky Bunny 1097 next to the statue of Goddess Ostara. The goddesses of springtime, Persephone, Ishtar, and Ostara, bring us the message of awakening and personal growth. Their gift is the motivation and the energy we need to pursue our dreams. As the tender green buds begin to leaf out around us, our own lives are filled with vital energy. Spring is the time to make room in our hearts for a passion for all things new. And it helps to use a little bit of magic and...
Lucky Bunny (LB) 1097 rescued from the notorious Santee Alley at LA Fashion District was meant to be just that - Easter Bunny. Last week, when impounded by LAPD's Central Division and delivered to BWF by LA Fashion District's Clean & Safe Team, this baby was approximately 7 days old. Sold as a three months old "dwarf"/"miniature" rabbit by a illegal animal vendor, the baby was unweaned, sickly, and would have died if it hadn't been treated with antibiotics, fed milk, and kept on a heating pad. LB 1097 is ONLY one of some 1100 such Lucky Bunnies taken in and nursed to health by BWF. But what about thousands that end up in the wrong hands? Or in the "right hands" that end up having to pay $1k in emergency fees to save a bunny that STILL cannot be saved nor make it on its own? For those who are well acquainted with our cause, this Easter we have TWO bits of GREAT news to share!
On Monday, April 20, 2011 - BWF invited LA Animal Services, Animal Cruelty Task Force, SPCALA, Immigration, and reps from the offices of City Mayor, District Attorney and City Attorney to discuss the ongoing issue of illegal animal sales/animal cruelty at LA Fashion District. EVP of SPCALA pointed out that there is a bill SB 917 that they are sponsoring which, among other things, seeks to ban road-sales of animals state wide. If you are interested in supporting the bill, the author, Senator Ted Lieu, needs letters of support. Letters sent this week should be addressed to Jeff.Gozzo@sen.ca.gov.
On Wednesday, April 21, 2011 - three days following the meeting, Brenda Bernette, General Manager of LA Animal Services submitted a report to the Board of Animal Services Commissioners recommending to the Mayor and City Council that the City support Senate Bill 917 (Lieu) with suggested amendments and to specify a jail term of up to six months for illegal selling, which if both the bill and amendments are approved, will ban the sale of live animals on streets, highways, public rights-of-the way, parking lots, carnivals, boardwalks, flea markets and swamp meets in California. It also will make animals neglect coincident to such sales punishable. Further, it will substantially conform misdemeanor penalties for various kinds of animal neglect to other penalties for cruelty and neglect already existing in the state Penal Code. If you would like a copy of the Report as well as the agenda for the Commission Meeting, please contact BWF directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We at BWF hope that our continued collaborative efforts will deter, and one day eradicate, the sale of underage, illegal, and endangered animals. In the meantime, the Commission Meeting Date is set for this coming Tuesday, April 26, 230911 at Los Angeles City Hall. The Board will provide an opportunity for public comment and members of the public wishing to speak are to fill out one speaker card for each agenda item on which they wish to speak and present it to the Board secretary before the item is called.
Finally, if you missed our "Bunnies & Bubbles" this weekend sponsored by Moet & Chandon, Milena's Candles, Marlo Noel's Jewlery and live music by DJ Valida(KCRW/School Night), you can still participate by making a tax deductible donation that will make a positive difference. Milena’s Boutique is still offering a delicious smelling assortment of candles as a fun way for you to help BWF and so is Marlo Noël. The gemstones she uses are hand-cut by a gemstone company that supplies to Tiffany and Co., Laura Gibson, Lori Lori and other contemporary jewelry designers. There are other ways to give to BWF and they're FREE to you! In fact, they are a simple click away!
Will you please consider helping us raise funds for medical treatment of Leia's eye loss, Lucy's broken leg, Romeo's head tilt treatment and our 30 bunnies that desperately need to be spayed and neutered. Your tax deductible donation is much appreciated.
We thank you for your support and your commitment to safeguarding our planet and its voiceless inhabitants. Happy Easter from all of us at Bunny World Foundation!
