Bunny World Foundation Plea For Help (2009-2010)

"Easter Bunnies" Seized by LAPD and Rescued by BWF

Dear Bunny World Foundation Friend:

It's the Spring season, the flowers are blooming, the sun is shining and there's a little hop in everyone's step.  Unfortunately, the Spring season also means that the illegal sales of animals in Santee Alley are increasing.

On Sunday, March 28, 2010, in Los Angeles, California the LA Police Department (LAPD) seized more than a hundred animals, including 35 baby rabbits, 79 turtles, 1 parrot, and 6 iguanas, that were being sold illegally on a street corner in downtown Los Angeles.

Alondra Alonzo, center, a Business Improvement District security officer, wrests a bag of rabbits from Stacy Martinez, who was trying to sell them on Maple Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. Sgt. Ernesto Mahano, right, arrives to assist.

According to LAPD Lt. Paul Vernon, "The illegal sales of animals is a perennial problem in the Fashion District, especially as certain holidays approach, like Easter".

An arrest for illegal sidewalk selling brings a citation. But if an animal control officer can certify that the animals are being badly kept, the vendor can be arrested on suspicion of felony animal cruelty.

Police encourage the public to report illegal sales of animals to their local animal services department or the local police.

LAPD Officer Matthew Shafer snaps a photo of confiscated animals. Shafer, who owns three rescue dogs, said that collaring sidewalk vendors illegally selling DVDs and animals is "my favorite thing."

Bunny World Foundation has been fighting this problem alongside the LAPD with the cooperation of the LA Fashion District and we will continue our crusade until these illegal sales are stopped.  We are looking to our friends, animals lovers and our community to help with this cause.

Due to Bunny World Foundation's recent rescue of over sixty of these baby bunnies we are in dire need of volunteers, financial support and donations to provide proper medical attention and housing for these bunnies during this critical time.  Until these illegal sales are finally stopped we can expect to be rescuing more.  If we don't rescue them these bunnies will be die.

Let's give these baby bunnies a second chance at life.  We hope that we can count on you to help!  Will you please consider making a donation today?

Hoppy Holidays to you and yours!

The bunnies sat in stacked cages on the downtown sidewalk. They nibbled on lettuce as passers-by stopped to pet them. How much? A young woman cheerfully named her price. ($20 is the going rate.)
